I use both R and RapidMiner (and for a while Python). R will definitely help you understanding all fundamentals of analytics, different models and data pre-processing as well as reporting. You will find out that what took you days can now be done in hours. At the same time, you will miss some plots and charts, and the way statistics are reported in R. It takes time to discover that many of these extras are also available via RapidMiner extensions. One more great facility in RapidMiner is R Scripting extension, so that if you are used to some R libraries, you can always jump out to R, perform some calculations and then return the results to RapidMiner for further computation. Good luck.
